Perennial Peanut

peanutFor Go Native Landscaping’s plant of the week we chose another one of our favorite ground covers and the only non-native plant that we utilize in our designs. While not native Perennial Peanut is categorized as Florida friendly and affixes nitrogen to the soil which is a great attribute for yards within the IRL watershed. Originally planted by farmers and utilized for grazing feed, the Perennial Peanut has recently made its way into many native yards across central and southern Florida. The Perennial Peanut has low flat foliage with yellow flowers that appear on and off throughout the year. Once established Perennial Peanut  requires low maintence and watering only during moderate to extreme dry periods. Once established, Perennial Peanut will crowd out many weeds and can be left natural to bloom or cut to resemble a traditional lawn. For more information check out this awesome VIDEO from UF/IFAS. Did we mention the flowers are also edible!
