Sunshine Mimosa

Mimosa provides a dense green ground cover of tiny fern-like leaves that shrink instantly from touch…giving it the common name of “Sensitive Plant.” Within seconds of being touched the bright green leaves fold up, to the delight of kids of all ages.

This is one of the fastest low growing ground covers to fill in a bare spot in a hurry and makes a great lawn replacement. Sunshine Mimosa is soft on the feet and does not require any of the typical maintenance of a traditional lawn. Mimosa can be cut like a lawn or left natural to allow beautiful pink flowers to emerge and add a splash of color to any yard.

Fiddlewood

Fiddlewood trees are a beautiful white flowering native tree that can be trimmed as a full shrub or tree. The flowers on a Fiddlewood  are white and give off a fragrant jasmine smell year round. In addition to flowing the Fiddlewood also produce orange berry throughout the year the are awesome to look at and edible. These trees make a great accent or focal point and are a must for any native landscape. Easy to maintain and care for Fiddlewood trees can be seen in their native habitat from Cape Canaveral to the Florida Keys.

Muhly Grass

Muhly Grass is a tough Florida native plant that is suitable for most locations. With its beautiful purple blooms and need for maintenance virtual non existant, Muhly Grass is a favorite plant here at Go Native Landscaping. Beauty Berry

Beauty Berry is an awesome native Florida shrub that produces purple and pink flowers in addition to bright purple berries annually. Between the flowers and berries the Beauty Berry adds color to your yard for approximately six months every year. Beauty Berries grow at a moderate pace and can reach eight feet in height. These shrubs look and perform best when planted in clumps of two to three and out of direct sunlight. Necklace Pod

Necklace Pod is a fast growing shrub that produces beautiful yellow flowers year round, with maximum plumage in fall. Necklace Pod is one of our favorite shrubs to plant in our local beach side environment due to its high salt tolerance and low maintenance and nutrient needs. Necklace Pods grow to 6-10 feet and provide a thick barrier for privacy in addition to providing habitat for local fauna such as bees, butterflies and humming birds. The leaves of the Necklace Pod stay green year round and the trunks are silver grey in color. Coontie

Often mistaken for a palm or fern the Coontie is actually a member of a species of plants that pre-dates the dinosaurs. The Coontie has thin narrow green leaves and is an extremely hardy and salt tolerant plant that requires little maintence once established. Coontie seeds provide food for many native animals including the rare Atala butterfly. Throughout history Coonties have been processed for food to make dishes such as Seminole bread. Coonties make a great addition to any yard as a permanent ground cover and are a consistent favorite of Go Native Landscaping. Perennial Peanut

For Go Native Landscaping’s plant of the week we chose another one of our favorite ground covers and the only non-native plant that we utilize in our designs. While not native Perennial Peanut is categorized as Florida friendly and affixes nitrogen to the soil which is a great attribute for yards within the IRL watershed. Originally planted by farmers and utilized for grazing feed, the Perennial Peanut has recently made its way into many native yards across central and southern Florida. The Perennial Peanut has low flat foliage with yellow flowers that appear on and off throughout the year. Once established Perennial Peanut  requires low maintence and watering only during moderate to extreme dry periods. Once established, Perennial Peanut will crowd out many weeds and can be left natural to bloom or cut to resemble a traditional lawn. For more information check out this awesome VIDEO from UF/IFAS. Horsemint 

Go Native’s selection for this weeks plant is Horsemint. Horsemint is a perennial that grows in thick bunches and produces purple flowers that attracts numerous species of bees and butterflies. Although Horsemint dies back in the winter, the summer flowers produce copious amounts of seeds that can be collected and planted in new locations, given to others to grow, or just left to reproduce in the same location the following spring. In addition to seeding the roots of the Horesemint stay alive during the winter once established in order to guarantee it blooms in the same location for planned gardens. With its beautiful purple flowers and the ability to attract native wildlife including acting as a pollinator for local bees it is no wonder why the Horsemint is a favorite of Go Native Landscaping.

Cocoplum 

Reaching a height of fifteen feet with an equal width once established, the salt tolerant Cocoplum can grow in full sun or partial shade and needs little to no irrigation once established. The Cocoplum is well adapted to growing in adverse soils and can be trimmed as a hedge or let to grow as a privacy barrier. In summer months the Cocoplums produce a  fruit which is edible to humans and many native species. The leaves of the Cocoplum are dark red when freshly sprouted and turn a deep rich green once established. Everglades Palm

One of only twelve native palms the Everglades Palm is a clustering, fan leaved palm with slender stems. When fully mature these slow growing palms can reach 30 feet in height and 20 feet in diameter. In the spring Everglades Palms produce white flowers followed in the summer by small orange fruits.
